Frequently Asked Questions

How is IP tuition different from other tuition classes?

By recognising that IP students face different challenges than their O Level tuition students, IP tutors can craft their lessons to specifically meet the needs of IP students. For example, Future Academy’s tuition for IP students takes into account the syllabus and teaching sequence of each IP school, and has separate classes for schools with different topic sequences.

IP tutors will also take into account the standards of the IP syllabus. Being able to do the tutorial questions is not enough as a lot of exam questions are much harder. So we help students work towards tackling high-level exam questions by guiding them to master the concepts, apply their knowledge, and problem-solve under pressure.

How do I choose the right IP tutor?

Ideally, the right IP tutor is someone who is familiar with the IP syllabus. This could be a former IP student, ex-IP teacher, or a tutor who has taught many IP students before.

Most parents would look for ex-MOE teachers in Singapore because they are not just knowledgeable in the subject, but they are trained to actually teach. They would also have a better understanding of the school’s perspective on what expectations they have for students, including learning objectives and how exam papers are marked.

Besides qualifications, look out for what other parents and students are saying about the tutor. Do they have a good reputation? Are they able to deliver results for students? What is their teaching style like? Go beyond the marketing and get third-party opinions, or sign up for one term to see if the teaching approach and results are in line with what you are looking for.

My child is not doing well in the Integrated Programme. What is happening?

We must understand that IP students face unique challenges. Being former top PSLE scorers, most students in the Integrated Programme are generally self-driven and smart. However, they may face issues like struggling to meet high expectations, pressure of being in a competitive environment, and a more challenging curriculum than those in non-IP streams.

Particularly, IP schools have a non-standard curriculum. So, many IP schools stretch students with more in-depth syllabi, more difficult exams, and a more independent learning approach where students need to figure things out by themselves. Some students don’t do well because they are not used to this system. They may need more time, along with clear structure and close guidance that help them get used to the pace and rigour of the IP.

How can I help my child do well in IP?

As a parent, it can be challenging to coach your own child if you are not familiar with the teaching content and the IP system. Not to mention, most parents are already busy with work and prefer not to tutor their own child as it may strain the relationship.

One recommended way to help your child do well in IP is to rely on expert educators who are trained in teaching, especially teachers who have prior experience with the IP syllabus. These top tutors in Singapore have a strong understanding of the syllabus, as well as the struggles that IP students face. Experienced tutors would also have developed their own approach to reliably help students improve and achieve good results.
