Information overload

It’s no secret that H2 Chemistry is content-heavy. From detailed definitions to complex chemical reactions, the sheer volume of information can feel overwhelming.

Thankfully, we have a team of experienced JC tutors who are here to help! Here’s what our tutors do and recommend for dealing with content overload in A Level Chemistry:

  • Use fun and effective memory aids: Humourous mnemonics, relatable analogies, and visual examples makes information stick more effectively with less effort!
  • Don’t try to memorise every single thing: Focus on the trends and exceptions. Seek out patterns and connections that you can use logically to deduce the answer. For example, rather than memorising the properties of every element, you can learn periodic trends and apply them logically.
  • Use it or lose it: The more you practice and make use of the information, the easier it will be to recall these information. Keep things fresh in your mind by practising regularly, especially in the 1-2 months before your exam.

Difficulty applying concepts to questions

The application questions are usually worth a lot more marks than the simple recall questions. Yet a lot of students have trouble with them because these questions require more thought and may bring together concepts from different topics.

As these questions will make a big difference in a student’s score, we focus a lot on teaching students answering skills. Our JC tutors will help you by:

  • Modelling the thought process for tackling different questions: Our tutors will verbalise step-by-step walkthroughs, highlighting the important points that students need to think about when answering these questions.
  • Building frameworks for answering questions: Some questions can use a flowchart approach, where students can ask themselves yes-no questions to narrow down the right solution.
  • Teaching students to identity and use keywords: We teach students to look out for keywords in the question that helps them identify the right concepts involved, and use the appropriate keywords to craft precise answers.

Weak understanding of concepts

Some students have trouble with grasping A Level Chemistry concepts due to various reasons like poor explanations from their school teachers, or weak foundations in previous topics. The issue is made worse because a lot of Chemistry topics are interconnected, and a knowledge gap in one topic will affect your understanding of subsequent topics.

That’s why having trained teacher who are skilled in pedagogical techniques is important to us. Our tutors consist of ex-MOE teacher who are able to help students:

  • Break down topics into simple explanations: Years of teaching experience has taught us the most effective ways to explain each concept, in ways that students can easily understand.
  • Focus on common problem areas: We have taught enough students to be able to pinpoint the most common issues that students face, as well as the most common ‘tricks’ that exam papers use to trip students up.
  • Provide individual feedback: Thanks to our small class sizes, we are able to dedicate time and resources to provide individual guidance, whether through in-class consultations, or regular updates to parents.

Struggling to finish the paper on time

Some students find it a challenge to finish the paper within the time limit. The Chemistry exam is not a test of your writing speed – if you are always struggling to finish, it could mean that you are taking too much time on recall, or using inefficient methods to answer the questions.

Here are some suggestions we give students who struggle with time management:

  • Speed quiz yourself: Use flashcards to test your speed of recall for common reactions and definitions.
  • Practise past-year papers: The A Level Chemistry exam often reuses the same question formats, so familiarizing yourself with past year questions can help you recognise and tackle questions more quickly.
  • Practise with timed conditions: Build up your speed and focus by practicing under timed conditions in the lead up to the exam.
