The Truth About NJC Math: Why Do Students Find It So Hard?

National Junior College’s Secondary (Junior High) section has a reputation for having one of the most rigorous Mathematics programmes among Singapore’s Integrated Programme (IP) schools.

If you’re considering NJC, it’s useful to know what to expect before joining the school. Or even if you’re already an NJC student who finds Mathematics particularly challenging, it’s comforting to know that you’re not alone.

So, is NJC Math really as difficult as people say, or is the reputation exaggerated?

As tuition teachers in Singapore, we can say that NJC Math is definitely demanding. The curriculum is designed to stretch capable students and prepare them for higher-level mathematical thinking, with the aim of making students ready to tackle JC (Senior High) A Level math. Let’s explore what contributes to its reputation.

Integrated Mathematics: A Combination of E Math and A Math

Like many IP schools, NJC does not separate Mathematics into Elementary Mathematics (E Math) and Additional Mathematics (A Math). Instead, all students have to study Math 1 and Math 2 in an integrated mathematics curriculum.

This means every student – even those who are relatively weaker at math – is expected to learn advanced topics. Students cannot drop one of the math subjects like how A Math is optional for the O Level exams.

The school also has the flexibility to design its own syllabus. Rather than following the sequence found in mainstream textbooks, NJC may introduce certain topics earlier or revisit them in a different order. For students and parents, this can sometimes be confusing, especially when external resources or assessment books do not match what they are currently learning in school.

A greater emphasis on higher-order thinking

One feature that distinguishes NJC Mathematics papers is the proportion of higher-order thinking questions. Most school examinations contain a balanced mixture of basic questions alongside more challenging higher-order thinking questions. NJC assessments, however, tend to have a heavier percentage of challenging questions, causing many students to struggle to score high marks.

Some parents and educators have even commented that the standard of NJC Mathematics papers is comparable to those from NUS High School or resembles the style of questions found at the A-Level.

As a result, simply memorising methods is rarely enough. Students need to develop strong problem-solving skills and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar questions. For tricky questions, it’s not enough to know the formulas, but students also need to know how to manipulate the formulae and approach a problem from different angles.

Hence, rather than teaching students to memorise solutions, we strive to help them understand the underlying concepts, analyse different question types, and develop the reasoning skills needed to approach novel problems independently.

A fast-paced learning environment

NJC’s IP programme admits academically strong students from across Singapore, and the Mathematics curriculum reflects this. Lessons move quickly, with teachers covering content at an accelerated pace and expecting students to study independently to keep up.

For students with a strong aptitude and passion for Mathematics, NJC also offers the Advanced Inquiry in Mathematics (AIM) Programme, which provides opportunities to participate in research projects, competitions, and enrichment in areas such as mathematical modelling, computing, and differential equations.

While these opportunities are exciting, they also highlight the school’s emphasis on developing talented minds. In contrast, it is easy for weaker students to feel left behind, comparing themselves to their high-achieving peers, and finding it difficult to keep up with the accelerated pace of learning.
