Comparing the start of Term 1 to Term 3, do you think Term 3 is more difficult?

Many students would say yes. Even students who have been doing well so far sometimes begin to see cracks in their learning during Semester 2. Grades may start slipping, lessons feel harder to follow, and keeping up with schoolwork becomes increasingly challenging.

So why does this happen so often in Term 3? Let’s explore some of these reasons and how you can stay on top of things in Semester 2!

There is no adjustment period in Semester 2

The start of a new school year usually comes with a built-in adjustment period. In Term 1, students often have orientation activities, introductory lessons, and opportunities to get familiar with new teachers, classmates, and routines. Teachers also usually take it easy in the first few weeks, recognising that everyone needs some time to settle in.

Term 3, however, is a different story.

Once Semester 2 begins, schools expect students to hit the ground running. Lessons resume immediately, and depending on the school and level, students may face tests, weighted assessments, and project deadlines within the first few weeks.

Without a proper plan, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. This is why our tuition centre in Singapore emphasise discipline and developing good study habits, beyond just teaching facts and content.

Semester 2 builds on what you learned earlier

As the school year progresses, subjects become increasingly interconnected. Many topics taught in Semester 2 require that students have already mastered concepts from earlier in the year.

For example, in Math you might learn Applications of Differentiation in Term 3, which builds upon the concepts and skills that you learnt in the chapter of Differentiation chapters beforehand.

If you have forgotten key concepts from earlier in the year, you may find yourself struggling to understand new lessons. Instead of learning new content, you end up with a quickly snowballing list of topics that you need to revisit.

To avoid this situation, we suggest you take some time during the school holidays to review major topics from Semester 1. Strengthening your foundation now will make it much easier to keep pace when Term 3 begins.

Semester 2 is shorter than it appears

Although the new term is called “Term 3”, the reality is that the end-of-year examinations are much closer than they seem.

For most students, there are only about one and a half terms left before year-end exams. For graduating cohorts sitting for major national examinations like the PSLE or O Levels, prelims may be just one or two months away.

Many students make the mistake of thinking they still have plenty of time. As a result, they delay revision until after the school has completed the syllabus.

Unfortunately, this often leaves them rushing through revision at the last minute.

The most effective students begin their year-end preparation while new topics are still being taught. By revising earlier topics in parallel, they give themselves sufficient time to consolidate their learning and identify weak areas before the exams approach.

How to prepare for Semester 2

Knowing that Semester 2 is likely to be more demanding, it makes sense to prepare for it proactively.

If you are reading this before Term 3 begins, there is still time to set yourself up for success. Review topics that gave you difficulty in Semester 1, organise your study schedule, and consult your tutor such as your PSLE Science tutor to identify areas that need work.

At Future Academy, our tuition classes such as IP Math tuition are designed to help students make a smooth transition into Semester 2. Whether it is revising challenging topics from the previous term, strengthening foundational concepts, or getting a head start on upcoming chapters, our lessons help students build confidence before school resumes.

Regular tuition lessons also provide structure and consistency during the school holidays, reducing the inertia that many students experience when returning to school after a month-long break.

A strong start to Term 3 can make a significant difference to your performance for the rest of the year. The earlier you prepare, the more confident and capable you will feel when Semester 2 begins.
