Many parents ask us the same question: “What’s the best way to help my child start preparing for the PSLE?”

Most parents recognise how important the PSLE is and genuinely want their child to do well. However, many are unsure how to support their child effectively. A common instinct is to buy stacks of assessment books and ask their child to complete more practice – but more worksheets do not always lead to better learning.

The reality is that primary school students are still developing the habits needed to study independently. Many don’t yet understand what it means to “revise”. They have shorter attention spans, struggle to plan their own learning, and can feel overwhelmed by vague instructions like, “Go and study.”

As tutors who have guided batches of PSLE students towards top PSLE scores, here’s what we’ve observed. What primary school students need isn’t simply more worksheets – they need structure, consistency, and guidance.

Here are three practical ways parents can help their child develop a sustainable study routine in the lead-up to the PSLE.

Create a system, not just a schedule

One of the biggest barriers to consistent revision is having to decide what to study every day.

Instead, establish a simple routine that your child can follow. For example, assign one subject to each weekday and fix a regular time for revision.

A useful technique is called habit coupling – pairing study time with something that already happens every day.

Instead of saying, “Study from 4pm to 5pm,” you could say: “After I have my afternoon snack, I’ll study for one hour before dinner.”

Over time, studying becomes part of the daily routine instead of something your child has to remember or negotiate.

This is also one reason why many parents find having PSLE tuition lessons helpful. Having a fixed class each week creates an anchor in the student’s schedule. Rather than relying solely on self-discipline, students develop a consistent rhythm of learning, with revision becoming a natural part of their weekly routine.

Keep study goals simple and achievable

To adults, “studying” is a familiar concept. To a Primary 5 or 6 student, however, it can feel confusing and overwhelming.

Avoid giving broad instructions like “Revise Science tonight.” Instead, break revision into small, achievable tasks.

For example:

  • Complete three pages of Mathematics practice.
  • Spend 30 minutes reviewing the Digestive System topic using flash cards.
  • Rewrite one past English composition using your teacher’s feedback.

Having a clear objective helps students stay focused and gives them a sense of accomplishment when they complete the task.

Similarly, structured tuition lessons often break learning into manageable weekly goals. Rather than wondering what to revise next, students follow a carefully planned programme that builds progressively towards the PSLE.

Reward consistency, not just results

It is natural to celebrate good grades, but don’t overlook the importance of recognising effort.

When your child follows their study routine, stays focused during revision, or takes the initiative to complete their work without being reminded, acknowledge these behaviours.

A simple word of encouragement, extra playtime, or another small reward reinforces the habit you want to see.

Good results are often a by-product of consistent effort over time. By praising the process instead of only the outcome, you help your child develop resilience, discipline, and a healthy attitude towards learning-qualities that will continue to benefit them well beyond the PSLE.

How Future Academy helps students stay consistent

We understand that the PSLE year can be demanding – not just for students, but for parents too.

Many parents spend their evenings marking worksheets, explaining difficult concepts, and reminding their child to study. After a full day at work, it can sometimes feel like taking on a second job.

The good news is that you don’t have to shoulder everything on your own.

At Future Academy, our lessons are designed to provide students with the structure and consistency that many families find difficult to maintain at home. Through regular weekly lessons, thoughtfully planned revision, and carefully curated learning materials, students develop a routine that keeps them progressing steadily throughout the year.

Beyond teaching content, our tutors help students identify weak areas, improve answering techniques, and build effective study habits. Parents no longer have to plan every revision session themselves, and students benefit from having a dedicated mentor who keeps them accountable week after week.

If your child is finding it difficult to stay disciplined, struggles with certain concepts, or simply needs more structure in their learning, talk to us! Whether it is through PSLE English tuition or PSLE Math tuition, we’d love to support them on their PSLE journey.
