Have you (or your child) been offered a place in the Integrated Programme? Or are you aiming to get them into the IP track?
As you may know, the IP track is not for everyone. Study methods like rote memorisation or spamming exam papers – that may be able to get you As at the O Levels – won’t guarantee you success in the IP curriculum.
So, using what our tutors have seen from years of teaching IP students, we have come up with this guide: a few tips on how to excel and flourish in the Integrated Programme!
For the parents, be sure to also check out our previous post on how to support your child who’s in the IP track!
How to excel in the IP
Re-adjust your and their expectations
Your child won’t be getting full marks or 90% marks for every test now – especially if they don’t study. They won’t be able to rely on luck or instincts. This is a time to work hard and work smart! The integrated programme rewards independent and consistent workers who are not just book-smart, but have the critical thinking skills to solve novel problems.
Make use of the opportunities
The whole point of the IP is to explore your interests beyond the core curriculum. Good at math and want to hone your talent in it? Join the Math talent programme! Enjoy science and research? Check out your school’s Science research programme or Science Olympiad club!
Don’t waste the chance to explore and gain experience, now that the resources and opportunities are right at your fingertips. When your child is actively pursuing what they like and growing holistically, they will also find their time in school more fulfilling.
Practise good time management
With all that’s going on, it’s easy to struggle with the perpetual conundrum of ‘not enough time’. The IP is a training ground for developing excellent time management, and anyone who wants to do well in it needs to learn how not to drown in all the activities.
Our word of advice? Learn to plan ahead, prioritise, and say ‘no’ when appropriate. It also helps a lot to reduce commuting times by choosing a school and tuition centre that is easy to get to, rather than having all activities situated at far distances from each other.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
The IP is challenging even for studious and bright students. Many IP students consult their teachers frequently or attend tuition classes. It doesn’t mean they are ‘bad’ students or not doing their work!
Some students may hesitate to ask due to pride or fear of judgment. But asking questions is part of the learning process, and most teachers understand that. If you are afraid to approach your school teachers, having a trusted tutor – like the ones we have at our IP Chemistry tuition classes – whom you can ask is crucial.
We help you excel in the IP
The greatest way to learn how to excel in the integrated programme is to learn from those who have gone through it. Well, you’re in luck, because we have a team of tutors in-charge of our IP tuition programmes, and many of them were IP school alumni themselves! Those who were not IP students may have taught in IP schools, or have years of experience teaching IP students. If there’s anyone who understands the struggles of IP students, it’s us.
