Has your child been invited to join the Science Olympiad programme in school, or selected to take part in Science Olympiad competitions? Are you curious about whether your child needs training for Science Olympiad?
For many parents, they don’t know what Science Olympiad is about until their child receives an invitation from the school that their child is selected to join a programme. While Math Olympiad programmes are generally more common and well-known, Science Olympiad is similar – serving as a platform for children who have a high aptitude and potential for science, beyond their main curriculum.

What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad refers to competitions focused on Science questions, designed as a platform to nurture a passion for science and showcase the abilities of students with talents in science.
The questions in Science Olympiad contests will require some fundamental knowledge across a broad range of science topics, but usually do not require heavy memorisation and recall of facts. Instead, the questions usually involve deduction, creativity, critical thinking, pattern recognition, and problem-solving skills.
Below are some sample questions you can try your hands at!

Science Olympiad in Primary Schools
Most schools will begin to identify and invite students to Science Olympiad from Primary 4 onwards. Some schools will just invite selected students to join Science Olympiad competitions, while others have a structured training programme to nurture students with potential. The frequency and intensity of these training programmes differs from school to school – most of these take place after school, and some are conducted by external vendors (and require additional fees).
Joining the Science Olympiad in school is not compulsory, but it can be a good avenue to provide your child with extra stimulation if science is their interest. Furthermore, the school can send your child to science competitions like the Singapore Primary Science Olympiad (SPSO), adding to your child’s portfolio and giving them a sense of accomplishment.
However, some parents also share that the Olympiad programmes held in schools tend to be quite basic, as the duration is short and the class sizes are too big to allow students to have effective training. As such, some parents enrol their child in private classes for Science Olympiad for more in-depth training.

Benefits of Science Olympiad training
Science Olympiad training by private centres are one way to help your child develop their skills and interest in science. These could supplement the Science Olympiad training in school, or be the main training programme for students who want to join Science Olympiad contests on their own.
As many parents don’t have experience with the Science Olympiad themselves, they have no idea what to expect. Attending a Science Olympiad training programme will give students access to resources and guidance to prepare them specifically for science competitions. The primary school science tutor will provide practice worksheets containing Olympiad-style questions, as well as teach methods on how to approach these questions.
