How To Choose A Suitable Tuition Centre For NYGH Students

Singapore has a billion-dollar tuition industry, but not all tuition centres in Singapore are the same. At the secondary school level, many tutors are familiar with the mainstream curriculum and prepare students primarily for the O Level examinations. So what happens if your daughter is studying in the Integrated Programme (IP) at Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH)?
Choosing the right tutor becomes especially important. The academic demands, curriculum structure, and learning expectations in NYGH differ significantly from those of a typical secondary school. Here are some factors parents should consider when looking for tuition support.
A different curriculum requires different expertise
As an independent school offering the Integrated Programme, NYGH has greater flexibility in designing its curriculum. This means that many subjects differ substantially from their O-Level counterparts.
Some key differences include:
- Instead of English, NYGH students take Language Arts, which combines language proficiency with literary analysis and critical thinking.
- Instead of Elementary Mathematics (E Math) and Additional Mathematics (A Math), students take Integrated Mathematics 1 and 2, which blend concepts from both subjects and often introduce topics in a different sequence.
- Instead of Social Studies, students study Integrated Humanities, which teaches similar skills like Source-Based Questions, but with different content.
- NYGH is a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school which places a strong emphasis on Chinese language, culture, and heritage. All students take Higher Chinese by default, and the curriculum goes beyond language acquisition to include appreciation of Chinese literature, history, and cultural traditions.
- NYGH students may join a variety of talent development programmes including Advanced Math and Advanced Science classes, which includes accelerated learning and expanded curricula for students strong in math or science.
These differences mean that a tutor familiar only with the mainstream O-Level syllabus may not be fully equipped to support an NYGH student who faces a unique syllabus, tough competition, and high demands of themselves.
Instead, a specialist such as an IP English tutor or IP Math tutor, should be deeply familiar with the intricacies of the NYGH curriculum. Having worked with NYGH students for years, our tutors at Future Academy understand the school’s expectations, assessment styles, and academic progression. We also have NYGH alumni on our teaching team who are able to connect with students through their own experiences navigating the programme.

High-ability students still require academic support
NYGH is known to enrol students who are in the top 10% of their PSLE cohort. As such, the curriculum is designed to challenge high-ability students, featuring more in-depth teaching and accelerated learning.
However, despite their academic capabilities, most students still need some support and time to adapt to their secondary school life – including having more subjects, more independence, and more CCA commitments. Some students find themselves unsure about how to revise, organise their notes, or tackle tough exam questions. Others struggle with balancing multiple projects, assessments, and co-curricular commitments.
Effective tuition for an NYGH student should thus go beyond teaching content. Our tutors help students develop strong study habits, organise their learning, and become more effective independent learners, while providing structure and guidance through weekly tuition classes.

A good tutor should bridge the exam gap
Here’s a common issue faced by NYGH students. They think they’ve understood the concepts in class, but when they sit the test, they are stumped.
That’s not due to a lack of studying or effort. But instead, IP school exams are known to be generally more difficult. Beyond straightforward recall-type questions, NYGH tests typically include higher-order thinking questions that challenges the students’ understanding of the concept.
As a result, a good tutor should be able to help students analyse unfamiliar situations, make connections across topics, and apply concepts flexibly to solve novel problems. At Future Academy, our lessons focus not only on content mastery but also on developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to excel in the IP curriculum. We expose students to challenging questions modelled after their past year papers, and guide them through the reasoning process, helping them bridge the gap between classroom learning and examination performance.

Facing the competition and the illusion of ‘average’
When you put together the best-performing students into one school, those who were top scorers in their primary schools might suddenly become just ‘average’ students. It’s easy for students to feel demoralised when they see their raw grades or compare grades with their classmates.
A suitable tutor for NYGH students should be able to help students put their grades into perspective and instil a healthy mentality towards learning. While we want to see our students getting top grades – we first and foremost want to help them grow as a learner. That means making lessons engaging and sharing our experiences to help students see the value of learning. It also means not comparing them to others, but focusing on their personal improvements – whether it is their grades, understanding, or confidence level.
Unlike some tutors who rely on drills, model answers, and excessive exam strategising to produce top scorers, we believe in the value of teaching students to understand concepts, build a framework for problem-solving, and enjoying the satisfaction of learning.
