How To Keep Track Of Your Learning With No Mid-Year Exams

A few years ago, MOE scrapped mid-year exams for schools in Singapore, from Primary to Junior College levels. Since then, schools do not have a major graded exam in the middle of the year. Most schools replaced this with a mix of smaller-weightage in-class tests, along with graded assessments like assignments.
While some students have embraced this change, it has also brought on new anxieties for some. In particular, some students are concerned about the lack of exam experience before they head into major national exams like the O Levels and A Levels. Additionally, without the mid-year exam, they feel like they have one less way to measure their progress.
If you’re looking for ways to stay on track and monitor your learning, here are some practical strategies you can adopt.

Do your own mock tests
What makes a mid-year exam a very real rehearsal for the major exams is the exam conditions. Learning to power through the time pressure is a skill in itself. Although quizzes and class tests are also timed, they are usually shorter and involve fewer topics, so they are less demanding.
To prepare yourself for the year-end exam or a major national exam, it’s a good idea to do your own mock tests while replicating exam conditions – timed, no distractions, a full paper. This practice will familiarise you with the process and build up your stamina for the real exams.
Some tuition centres in Singapore will also organise timed practices for their students to help with this. At Future Academy, we do timed practices – which might be topical or sections from a full paper – and then go through them together in class. Doing so in a classroom provides a valuable experience of doing these papers in an exam hall setting.
Do a mid-year review
One key difference between class tests and a mid-year exam is the scale. Class tests usually only test students on the latest 2 or 3 topics that they have learnt, but the mid-year exam typically includes all the topics learnt in the first half of the year.
So, while smaller class tests may be less stressful to study for, the stress may come later when students need to study content from Term 1 to 4 for the year-end exams. To avoid this situation, you can do a mid-year review to refresh your mind on what you learnt in Term 1 as well as Term 2.
Whether it’s PSLE tuition or JC tuition, our classes at Future Academy are helpful in providing regular revision and review during the June holidays, helping students brush up on trickier topics. At higher levels where topics tend to build on each other, this step becomes even more crucial to form a strong foundation for subsequent chapters. Our students also get access to specially curated summary cheat sheets that aid in consolidating their learning.
Check-in with your tutor
The thing about exams that you can’t do yourself is getting your teacher’s feedback. Even if you mark your own mock paper, you might not spot some errors such as presentation errors, missing workings, or broader patterns like a weakness in a specific skill.
That’s why having a tutor is so helpful in providing an expert perspective on your learning. With their experience, they can identify blind spots and advice you on ways you can improve. In many ways, a tutor who has worked with you for months or years can tell you a lot more about your progress than a single test paper. Our tutors at Future Academy are known for being patient and supportive in this way, providing tailored advice and helping students gain confidence in their studies.

Mid-year exams once served as a useful checkpoint for students to assess their readiness for major exams. Even without them, it is still entirely possible to stay on track — with consistent practice, regular review, and meaningful feedback.
Taking ownership of your learning is key. Whether it’s identifying weaker areas, refining exam techniques, or building confidence, small and consistent efforts can make a big difference over time.
