How It’s Done: Personalised Learning In Tuition Classes

At Future Academy, we believe that every student learns differently. Every student is a child or teen who has their own preferences in learning style, their own goals and motivations, and their own talents and abilities.

That is why a one-size-fits-all approach is not what we do. Instead, we place strong emphasis on tailoring our lessons to suit each student’s learning needs, strengths, and pace. Whether it is through small group tuition or one-to-one tuition, we make it our mission to provide personalised support and offer an encouraging learning environment.

One way we do this is by offering a trial period for new students who are interested in joining our tuition classes, but are unsure of whether our programmes are suitable for them.

Understanding how you learn

The initial few lessons are a time for our tutors to understand their students better. During lessons, tutors observe how students learn, participate, and respond to different teaching approaches. This helps us cater our lessons to our student’s learning preferences and habits.

For example, some students in our PSLE Science Tuition are strong visual learners, so our tutors will make it a point to use diagrams, drawings, or physical models to help them understand new concepts better. By asking for feedback after each lesson, our tutors can then tweak their lesson delivery to ensure that all students can learn effectively in the classes.

Identifying the help you need

No two students struggle in exactly the same way. Some are weak in certain topics, while some are weak in certain skills. An effective tutor is able to identify these gaps accurately and provide targeted support – be it level-appropriate worksheets, different ways of explaining concepts, or more attention on developing answering skills. The first few lessons are most important for our tutors to observe and identify your needs as a learner.

We think this is the biggest benefit of hiring a real, live tutor – as opposed to relying on pre-recorded video lessons or AI chats for homework help. The fastest way to improve is by getting real, personalised feedback from experts who have helped hundreds of other students before you!

To help us understand how we can support your learning, we also encourage parents and students to:

• Bring along some of your current homework and share the questions you have trouble with
• Bring along your recent assessment or tests to let your tutor review what could be improved
• Share with us your learning goals and aspirations
• Share your feedback with us on how you are finding the lessons

Curating the right materials for you

At Future Academy, we have built up a large bank of study resources and practice materials over the years. However, our tutors are intentional about selecting the right materials for each student, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach.

For example, if you are a student struggling with differentiation in your IP Math Tuition class, our tutor will first assess your current level of understanding before carefully introducing foundational questions to build confidence and mastery step-by-step.

On the other hand, students who are already performing well may be given more challenging questions that stretch their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities further.

Because we work with students from a wide range of schools across Singapore, we are also able to provide school-specific resources and exposure to different question styles and standards.

Trial classes at Future Academy

We offer 4 trial lessons for students who are thinking of joining Future Academy for tuition. These trial lessons are flexible arrangements where parents and students can experience lessons in Future Academy before making a commitment to a full term. Having a 4-week trial period allows parents and students to form an accurate assessment of our classes and the students’ progress over time, as compared to a one-time trial.

To make the most of your trial period, we encourage parents and students to communicate closely with the tutor, raising any concerns about specific areas of help that you need or how you wish lessons would look like.

Over the years, we have accommodated special requests such as:

• Providing trial lessons with various tutors to find the best fit for a student with specific learning needs
• Offering flexible arrangements for a student with busy CCA and competition commitments
• Ad hoc one-on-one tuition for students 1-2 months before their O Levels

While we cannot guarantee to able to accommodate every request, we are open to exploring different possibilities to find a best solution for students who are eager to learn and grow.
