The closest thing that Singapore students will get to a rehearsal for the PSLE is their school prelim exams. Usually held in August, about a month before the real PSLE, these prelims are the final milestone for students to gauge their performance and make those crucial last-step improvements before the big day.

So, what can you expect from the PSLE prelim exams? And how can you best support your child in preparing for the PSLE? Here are some strategies you can use – which our tutors also use for our students during this last sprint.

Learn better ways to study and improve your performance with guidance from expert tutors (ex-MOE) through our customised teaching framework.

1. Prioritise topics to revise

With only a few weeks left before the prelims and the PSLE, revising everything in detail is nearly impossible. If you can’t finish reviewing the whole syllabus, the key is to be strategic.

  • Quick reviews for strong topics: Allocate some time to review topics that the child is strong in, but don’t dwell too long on them if there are no big issues.
  • Focus on weak and high-stakes topics: Spend more time on weak areas and topics, as these are the sections that will truly make a difference. If your child is weak in several topics, prioritise the major topics that are usually worth more marks in the exam.

Having the support of experienced PSLE tutors can be invaluable as they can identify your child’s weak spots, and are familiar with the high-weightage PSLE Math topics. In the lead-up to the prelims and PSLE, our tutors place extra emphasis on these “hot topics” to maximise their performance.

2. Review past assignments and tests

A good way to identify weak topics or poor exam skills is to review past assignments and tests. Look for recurring mistakes and help your child address them.

  • Math & Science: Common issues include copying the wrong number, forgetting units, or making small calculation errors. Train your child to slow down, double-check work, and reserve the last five minutes for checking answers.
  • Languages: Track repeated spelling and grammar mistakes and compile them into a list for daily practice.
  • Question analysis and answering skills: Misinterpreting the question, missing out important keywords, or going out of point are serious issues that you can train your child to avoid. Go through the steps of what to do when encountering a question – underlining keywords, identifying the question word, and drafting an answer.

If you are not sure how to help your child work on these common errors, our Future Academy tutors can help! Our Primary School Tutors in Singapore are skilled at spotting these patterns and giving personalised feedback so students can turn mistakes into learning opportunities.

3. Do timed practices

While the prelim exams are an excellent opportunity to practise pacing and exam stamina, it is not enough. At home, set aside time for timed practices, where you let your child complete a paper without distractions. This will also help them build their concentration and get used to sitting still for an extended period.

Tips for doing a timed practice at home:

  • Use past year papers either from the PSLE or school prelim papers.
  • Provide a quiet space away from distractions. No phones, tablets, or TV screens!
  • Provide a clock for your child to keep track of their own time.
  • Ask the family to cooperate so that no one will disturb the child who’s attempting the paper.
  • Leave the room door open or get your child to sit in the living room so that you can still check on them once in a while to ensure they are focusing.

If you don’t have a lot of time at home with your child, it can be difficult to administer timed practices. Tuition classes are a good way to outsource this part of the revision process, as tutors can help you provide the practice papers, supervise your child, and also go through the paper with them afterwards.

4. Prepare the exam day checklist

Prelims are also a great chance to rehearse exam-day rules and avoid last-minute surprises during the PSLE. While students would have already experienced some tests and exams in school, the PSLE includes stricter rules and different arrangements.

Key rules to remember:

  • Use black or dark blue ballpoint pens for written answers, and a sharp 2B pencil for drawings.
  • No highlighters, correction fluid, or correction tape.
  • Use a transparent pencil case or ziplock bag.
  • No unauthorised items such as notes, phones, or tablets.
  • Only approved dictionaries or calculators for papers that allow them.
  • For composition: write only in the allocated space, on both sides of the paper, and do not leave blank lines in between.

During the PSLE, students will also receive a sticker with their index number and details. Students should listen to the instructions on where to place the sticker or write their index number.
