What Happens During A Tuition Lesson In Future Academy?

Every wondered what it is like to be a student at Future Academy? Is it just doing your own homework in a supervised setting? Or cramming into a lecture hall to listen to the sagely advice of super tutors?
Many people think that tuition classes are all the same, but the truth is far from that. Some tuition classes are conducted lecture-style with 40 to 50 students in a huge classroom. Most tuition classes include some mixture of teaching, practice, and review, but each tutor does it in different proportions. Depending on your needs and learning style, some types of tutoring might be more effective for you than others.
To give a better idea of how we conduct our classes at Future Academy, here’s a run through of what we do in one of our tuition classes!

Content teaching
During the content teaching part of the lesson, our tutor will explain the concepts, breaking it down in ways that students can easily understand. Depending on the teaching schedule, the tutor may be teaching a topic in advance, or reviewing previous topics (usually during test preparation periods). These teaching sessions are most helpful for students who struggle with fast-paced lessons or self-directed learning in school.
To make learning more engaging for students, we usually implement interactive elements during classes as well, such as involving students in discussions, having mini quizzes, using multimedia tools, or hands-on demonstrations. Thanks to our passionate and dedicated tutors, lots of our IP Math tuition students tell us that they enjoy lessons and look forward to coming each week!

Timed practice
Some weeks, we conduct timed practices during lesson time. As tutors, we firmly believe that timed practices are beneficial for students to improve their focus and time management skills. It gets them used to the routine of sitting for a test, and we get a more accurate gauge of how a student might perform in a real test setting. In fact, due to the removal of mid-year exams in schools, we see a rise in demand in parents requesting for timed practices and mock papers because students don’t get enough practice in school.
Some parents may ask: Isn’t it a waste of teaching time to do timed practices during class time? That is why we keep these timed practices short instead of attempting a full paper in one shot. For students who may be too busy or have difficulties doing their own timed practice at home, these in-class sessions are tremendously helpful to them.

Reviewing questions
For a lot of students in the B grade range, their trouble is that they understand the concepts, but they are unable to apply them in the way that examiners want. So, reviewing questions from timed practices or assigned homework is one way we teach answering skills like analysing the question, presenting answers well, and using the right keywords or workings.
Whether it is in our Combined Science tuition class or PSLE Math tuition, we often also share our students’ work as a learning opportunity – these gives us real examples of common misconceptions and mistakes that students actually make. Overtime, the aim is for students to be able to avoid these mistakes on their own, or spot them and correct them in time.
