Algebraic Expansion: Step-By-Step For Secondary Math Students

Is algebraic expansion still confusing you? Many of our Secondary Math Tuition students find algebraic expansion tricky at first, and it’s normal to struggle with it when you are still learning the ropes. But with the proper practice, algebraic expansion should become as instinctive as doing addition or subtraction. You will need to know how to do expansion very well, as you will continue to need it even at more advanced levels.

In this article, our Math tutors will walk you through a step-by-step method to build your skills – from beginner level all the way to more advanced applications.

Why is learning algebraic expansion important?

Simply speaking, algebraic expansion is the process of multiplying expressions to remove brackets. It is almost as fundamental as knowing how to add and subtract numbers. As it helps you re-arrange the terms in an algebraic expression, it is useful in many cases where you need to solve algebraic equations.

And that’s why we cannot emphasis how important it is to master this skill early! You will find that you cannot solve a lot of equations in other topics if you are unable to expand an algebraic expression correctly and quickly.

How to practice algebraic expansion: A step-by-step guide

Algebraic expansion can be very basic, or very complicated. For a beginner, we definitely recommend starting from the basics to build up your confidence, before introducing more complicated examples to try.

Students in our O Level or IP Math Tuition class can also consult their tutor for help, or to request suitable worksheets for additional practice. Let’s get started!

Level 1: Master the basics

Start with simple expressions with just one bracket before moving on to those with more brackets or terms.

Our advice to students:

  • Use colour coding or arrows to help you keep track of what you are multiplying. This makes it easier to check your work later on as well.
  • Remember to take into account the positive and negative signs. When you multiply two numbers with the same sign, you will get a positive term. When you multiply two numbers with different signs, you will get a negative term.
  • Write all terms separately first before combining the like terms.

Level 2: Learn and use algebraic identities

Some expressions can be expanded more easily using algebraic identities. Learn how to recognise these types of expressions and when you should use algebraic identities to speed up your workflow!

The algebraic identities you should know are:

Level 3: Take on more challenging expansions

Once you have mastered the basics, you can move on to more complex expressions, like those involving fractions, exponentials, surds, or those with more brackets and terms.

Our advice to students:

  • Take a moment to observe patterns and organise the expression before you dive in. Could you regroup some terms or re-arrange to form an algebraic identity somewhere?
  • Convert expressions into a format that you know how to work with. For example, turn surds into an exponential form.
  • Show every step clearly. Don’t try to do shortcuts as you may lose track of your calculations and make careless mistakes. In the event that your final answer is wrong, your workings may also save you some marks!

Level 4: Solve algebraic word problems

Sometimes, you will encounter word problems which involve algebraic expansion. Usually, you need to form your own equation and then solve it. Being exposed to a variety of word problems will help you tackle unfamiliar problems more confidently.

Our tutor’s advice:

  • Make sure you are also familiar with common geometric formulae like area, perimeter, and volume of shapes; as well as concepts like percentages, ratio, and money.

Secondary Math: Coordinate Geometry Formulae And Exam Tips

Coordinate geometry is a topic which combines concepts from algebra, graphs and geometry. Recall how you can describe a line on a graph in terms of y=mx+c ? Coordinate geometry involves describing shapes and their properties in terms of algebraic functions which are plotted onto a graph. In some of our IP Math Tuition classes [...]
