As the year-end exams wrap up, students are beginning to receive their marked papers. It’s normal for some to feel disappointed if the results don’t match their expectations. But rather than treating this as a setback, we like to use this as an opportunity to help students learn from their mistakes and do even better next year!
For our tuition students, we typically recommend them to review their exam papers with their tutor, as they can offer their expertise based on years of marking other students’ papers. A good tutor in Singapore will be able to offer insights that you may otherwise miss, as well as advice on how to tackle those problem areas.

Achieve your study goals with us
Learn better ways to study and improve your performance with guidance from expert tutors (ex-MOE) through our customised teaching framework.
Step 1: Review your exam paper
Your exam paper contains information that can tell you what you need to do to improve your score. First, you want to note down all the mistakes or areas where you lost marks, and label them accordingly.
- Note down whether the mistake is a major one (e.g. getting less than half the marks) or minor one (e.g. losing 1 or 2 marks)
- Sort the mistakes by topic or chapter. This will help you see if you are weak in a specific topic.
- Label the mistakes by the type of mistake they are. For example, is it a careless mistake, poor answering technique, or a conceptual mistake?
When you have collated all your mistakes, you can look for patterns and target the most problematic areas.
Step 2: Reflect on your study technique
Many of our students are hardworking and conscientious, which makes them wonder: Why am I not doing well even though I studied so hard?
Some of it boils down to inefficient study methods or simply a lack of knowledge of what’s the best revision technique for themselves. To reflect on your study approach and make improvements, you can ask yourself:
- Did I start revising too late or planned insufficient time to finish covering all the topics?
- Was I using inefficient methods (e.g., copying notes without real understanding)?
- Am I studying in a way that suits me (e.g. making use of visual tools if you are a visual learner)?
- Do I have access to reliable notes, practice papers, and guidance when I get stuck?
The hard part is that schools often teach content but not study techniques – so students are left to figure this out by themselves. It really takes conscious effort to develop a study system that works for you, but the results are definitely worth it!
Step 3: Use the holidays wisely
If your exam results were below expectations, waiting until next year won’t solve the problem. The start of the new school year brings a wave of transitions to adapt to, including new classmates, teachers, and an even more difficult curriculum.
That’s why the year-end holidays are the perfect time to get a head start. Without the stress of ongoing schoolwork, students can address outstanding issues and get an early introduction to next year’s topics in a more relaxed atmosphere. Students will get to work under the close guidance of an experienced tutor, be it a primary school tutor or secondary school tutor who will teach them essential study strategies, content knowledge, and exam skills.
Turn weaknesses into strengths with our year-end classes
Instead of immediately chucking your exam paper, why not use it as a springboard to bounce back for the next year? If you haven’t already done so, schedule a class or consultation with our tutors to review your past year’s performance and set a gameplan for turning things around.
At Future Academy’s Year-End Catch-Up and Headstart Classes, students can:
- Consult expert tutors to identify key weaknesses and strategise ways to improve
- Get personalised guidance in a relaxed small group class setting
- Learn topics ahead to reduce stress in the next academic year
The holiday period is short, but with structured support, it can make all the difference. Don’t wait until next year to fix this year’s mistakes – help your child step into the new school year feeling prepared and motivated!
