Fail to A in One Term: How Tuition Helped An RGS Student Excel

When she first came to us for tuition, she had just failed her math test and was feeling demoralised and lost. Barely one term later, she walked away with an ‘A’ grade in math.
Here’s the story of one RGS Sec 2 student and how our tutor helped her achieve a 100% improvement in just one term!
The struggle
When Ting (name changed for privacy), joined us in Term 2 of 2025, she had just scored 14 out of 30 for her math test – far below her expectations, and a huge blow as an RGS student. Naturally, her mother was worried and enrolled her in our IP Math tuition at Future Academy.
From what our students share with us, Ting’s case is not unusual. Many RGS students – even in Sec 1 – have found themselves failing their math tests, despite being former top scorers in the PSLE.
Why does this happen?
- There’s a big leap in rigour and pace from primary to secondary school.
- IP schools like RGS often set very tough papers to stretch students.
- On top of academics, Sec 1 students are also adjusting to new teachers, CCAs, and school environments.
In many cases, these students are bright and have tons of potential to do well. But they may be overwhelmed by the sudden increase in demands and they often need the right guidance and strategies to keep up and excel.

How we helped Ting improve
Ting enrolled for weekly one-on-one tuition sessions, and our IP Math tutor mapped out a clear plan to get her back on track.
Closing the knowledge gaps
We first reviewed Ting’s past tests to identify weak areas, then re-taught those topics and corrected misconceptions. This was very important for ensuring she had a solid foundation to build on for subsequent topics.
Strengthening conceptual understanding
At a school like RGS, surface-level understanding isn’t enough. We trained Ting to approach problems from multiple angles, apply concepts flexibly, and tackle higher-order questions with confidence. Our tutor gradually led Ting to do questions with higher difficulty levels and build up her skills.
Practising exam-style questions
What shocks students is when their test is much more difficult than what they were taught in class. To reduce this shock and prepare her sufficiently for her next test, we work with Ting on past-year papers and questions in similar styles. This also allowed us to better gauge her preparedness for the exams.
Timed practice sessions
Compared to primary school, secondary school exams are longer and require more workings. So, our tutor made sure to also allocate time for timed practices, working on improving Ting’s speed and ability to work under pressure.
The results
After just one term of consistent effort, Ting’s transformation was remarkable. She scored 28 out of 30 for her next math test in Term 3 – a complete turnaround from her earlier result!
Her mother was thrilled and grateful, Ting was proud of her achievement, and we were equally delighted to see her hard work pay off.

Why tuition makes a difference
Many parents wonder: Does tuition really help? How quickly can my child improve?
Every student progresses differently. But in our experience, with structured guidance and the right strategies, most of our students show visible improvements within 1-2 terms – as long as they put in the effort too.
Ting’s story is proof that even students from Singapore’s top schools can face challenges. But with the right support, they can regain confidence, strengthen their foundations, and thrive.
If your child is struggling with math or IP school demands, don’t wait until poor results pile up. With proper guidance from a IP tutor in Singapore, they can turn things around – just like Ting did.
